Clarinda, the seat of Page County in southwest Iowa, was a farm-trading town in 1908, where corn, hogs, and cattle drew business to its square and rail depots. That summer, the Chautauqua Assembly brought lectures, concerts, and recitations to the grounds, offering rural families a chance to hear speakers on current affairs, moral reform, and travel that the nearby towns seldom hosted. Chautauqua programs were a common summer custom across the Midwest, and in a year of heated national politics, when voters were choosing between William Jennings Bryan and William Howard Taft, such gatherings also served as a forum for civic debate. Clarinda's residents would have known the grounds as a place to meet neighbors from surrounding farms and to share in a public calendar that linked small Iowa towns to wider national conversations. The town would later be remembered as the birthplace of bandleader Glenn Miller, born there in 1904.
