Anamosa, the seat of Jones County in eastern Iowa, sat on the Wapsipinicon River in 1908, a small town whose fortunes were tied to the surrounding farmland and to the state penitentiary on its edge. The prison, opened in the 1870s, had long put convict labor to work in local limestone quarries, and the gray stone of many area buildings reflected that work. By 1908, eastern Iowa was in the middle of a prosperous farm era, with corn, oats and hogs carried out by rail to larger markets. Residents would have known Anamosa for its prison, its stone and its courthouse square, where civic life gathered around churches, lodges and the local newspaper.
