Creston, the seat of Union County in southwestern Iowa, was in 1908 a railroad town whose fortunes rested on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy line that had reached it near the close of the 1860s. Trains carried corn, hogs, and cattle out of the surrounding farmland, and the railway's yards gave steady work to machinists, carpenters, and clerks who lived on the town's residential streets. Farm families from across the county came into town to trade, and the stores around the courthouse square served as the commercial center of their week. Like most Iowa county seats of that era, Creston was governed by local merchants and professional men who argued over street paving, water service, and schools at council meetings. Residents in 1908 knew their town chiefly as the place where the railroad and the farm economy met.
