Forest City, the county seat of Winnebago County in north-central Iowa, was a farm-trade town in 1908, when its streets and businesses depended on the corn, oats, and hogs raised on the surrounding land. Like most Iowa towns of that era, it was linked to the outside world by rail, which carried grain, livestock, and merchandise in and out. The lakes nearby drew summer visitors, and the town's churches, schools, and courthouse made it the center of county civic life. Residents in 1908 would have known Forest City as a quiet, orderly market town where neighboring farm families came to trade, settle accounts, and hear the news. The decade was a period of steady agricultural prosperity across Iowa, and small county seats like this one grew or held steady as the farm economy around them did.
