Glenwood, the seat of Mills County in southwestern Iowa, sat a few miles east of the Missouri River in 1908. Its economy rested on the surrounding farms, which sent grain and livestock out by rail, and on the county courthouse and merchants who served them. Omaha, just across the river, drew local trade and jobs, and the town's ties to that larger city shaped much of its daily commerce. On the edge of town stood the state hospital for the insane, a major institution whose wards, farm fields, and staff housing made it a familiar part of local life. Residents knew Glenwood as a quiet county center built around agriculture, churches, and the depot.
