Glenwood, the seat of Mills County in southwestern Iowa, sat on rolling bluffs a few miles east of the Missouri River bottoms when this panorama was taken on October 12, 1915. Farming was the foundation of the county, and corn, hogs, and cattle moved through local markets toward Omaha, a short distance west across the river. The town's state institution for children with developmental disabilities, which had been operating on the edge of town for decades, was among its best-known employers and gave Glenwood a reputation beyond the county. In 1915 most residents still followed the grain and livestock seasons closely, and news from the war in Europe, which the United States had not yet entered, reached them mainly through the county paper and the railroad depot.
