Grinnell, Iowa, in 1907 was a small Poweshiek County town that had grown up around Grinnell College, founded by Congregational settlers in the 1850s under the leadership of Josiah Bushnell Grinnell. The college and its ties to abolitionism and church life shaped the town's reputation as a quiet, school-centered community. Its economy rested mainly on the surrounding farms, which produced corn, oats, and livestock, and on the trade that moved through the town's shops and grain elevators. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific rail line gave local farmers and merchants access to larger markets, and residents in 1907 would have known the town first for its college and its farming country.
