Hampton, the county seat of Franklin County in north-central Iowa, was in 1907 a farm-trade town whose fortunes followed the corn, oats, and hog markets of the surrounding prairie. Its business life centered on the courthouse square, where lawyers, grain buyers, and merchants met farmers who drove in by wagon on market days. Grain elevators and creameries along the rail lines shipped the region's produce out to larger markets. Residents would have known Hampton as a quiet, church-going county seat, where civic pride rested on its schools, its courthouse, and the county fair held each year.
