Indianola, the seat of Warren County in south-central Iowa, was a small farm town in 1907, a short drive south of Des Moines. Its economy rested on corn, oats, and livestock raised on the surrounding land, with grain and stock moved out by rail to larger markets. Simpson College, a Methodist-affiliated school founded in the town in 1860, added a steady population of students, faculty, and church members to the courthouse, shops, and businesses clustered around the square. Residents would have known Indianola as a quiet county seat closely tied to farming and to the state capital nearby, whose growing trade and rail connections reached farm families throughout the county.
