Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, stood in 1907 as the principal institution of higher learning in Warren County, a Methodist-affiliated school founded in 1860 and named for Bishop Matthew Simpson. Indianola was a small county seat in the south-central Iowa farm country, where the economy rested on corn, hogs, and cattle, and town life revolved around the courthouse square, the churches, and the college. Many students came from farm families across the region, and a good number planned to teach, preach, or return home to work the land. The campus reflected the broader Progressive-era faith in education that spread through Midwestern towns in those years.
