Spencer, the county seat of Clay County in northwest Iowa, was in 1907 a farm trading town built around the railroad that had drawn settlers onto the prairie a few decades earlier. Grain elevators, stock yards, and implement dealers handled the corn, oats, and hogs that made the surrounding countryside one of the state's productive farm regions. Families from outlying townships drove in to shop, transact county business at the courthouse, and gather for public occasions. Church steeples and the rail depot were the landmarks residents would have recognized first, and the town's fortunes rose and fell with the crops and the livestock markets that passed through its yards.
