Sheldon, Iowa, in 1907 was a railroad and farm-trade town in the northwest corner of the state, serving the O'Brien County farms that surrounded it. The rail line that brought settlers to the area in the 1870s and 1880s still shaped daily life, with grain elevators, lumber yards, and livestock shipping tying local farmers to distant markets. Corn, oats, and hogs were the basis of the local economy, and the creamery and produce trade fed the town's shops and banks. As the county seat, Sheldon also drew farm families to the courthouse, churches, and Saturday business on its main streets. Residents of the period would have known the town first as a place where prairie land had been turned into productive farms within a single generation.
