Newton, Iowa, in 1907 was still a county seat in the grain and livestock country of Jasper County, but its economy was broadening beyond farming. The Parsons Band Cutter and Self Feeder Company, founded in Newton in 1893 to make farm machinery, was becoming a larger local employer, and by the early 1900s it was moving toward the household washing machines that would later carry the Maytag name. Factory wages and the steady work of shops and offices drew families into town from surrounding farms. Residents of the period would have known Newton as a place where a practical invention made at home could find buyers across the Midwest. The town's streets and downtown blocks, seen from above in this view, show a community that was growing with its new industry.
