Mount Pleasant, the seat of Henry County in southeastern Iowa, was in 1907 a market town serving a farm district known for corn, oats, and livestock. The years after 1900 brought strong crop prices, and that prosperity reached landowners, merchants, and tradesmen around the town square. Iowa Wesleyan College, a Methodist school founded in the 1840s, gave the town a second identity as a college community, where students and faculty mixed with local families. Residents studying a panorama of their town that year would have recognized the courthouse square, the church steeples, and the rail lines that carried grain and hogs to distant markets.
