Iowa Wesleyan University occupied its campus at Mount Pleasant, the county seat of Henry County in southeast Iowa, when this view was made in 1907. The Methodist-affiliated college had been chartered in 1842 and was one of the earliest schools of higher learning in the state, drawing students from surrounding farm families. Mount Pleasant's economy rested on the corn and livestock farms around it, and its merchants and shippers depended on the railroads that carried grain and hogs to larger markets. For townspeople in 1907, the college was a center of civic and religious life, where literary societies, church gatherings and commencement exercises brought the community onto its grounds.
