Winterset, the seat of Madison County in south-central Iowa, drew its livelihood in 1907 from corn, hogs, and cattle, which farmers moved to larger markets by rail and road. The courthouse square anchored the town's business, county government, and trade, and farm families came into town regularly to buy supplies and handle legal affairs. The covered bridges scattered across the surrounding countryside were then ordinary working crossings, though they would later become the county's best-known landmarks. The town would later be remembered as the birthplace of the actor John Wayne, born there in May of that same year, when Winterset was still a small community whose social life centered on its churches, its lodges, and the square.
