Webster City, the county seat of Hamilton County in north-central Iowa, was in 1907 a farm-trade town whose fortunes rose and fell with corn, hogs, and cattle raised on the surrounding prairie. Railroads brought grain, livestock, and coal into town and carried finished goods out, and the town's merchants, banks, and grain buyers depended on that traffic. Its streets and business blocks were the places where farmers came to sell, shop, and settle county affairs on court days and market days. Residents of the time would have known Webster City first as the seat of county government and as a stop on the rail lines that tied the Iowa prairie to Chicago and the wider grain markets.
