Charles City, the seat of Floyd County in north-central Iowa, sat on the Cedar River in 1907 and lived largely by the farm trade around it. Corn, oats, and hogs from the surrounding countryside moved through its grain elevators, stockyards, and rail sidings, and the railroad tied the town to the larger markets downstate and to the Twin Cities. Along the river, small manufacturing shops and mills drew on water power and employed local workers, while downtown brick business blocks and paved streets showed a town that had grown steadily since its founding. Residents of the period knew Charles City as a practical, church-and-lodge community where Saturday trade days, county business at the courthouse, and the arrival of trains shaped daily life.
