Mason City, the seat of Cerro Gordo County in north-central Iowa, was a railroad and farm-trade town in 1907. Several rail lines crossed the prairie there, and they carried corn, oats, hogs, cattle, and dairy products out to Midwestern markets while bringing in lumber, machinery, and merchandise. Local people knew the town as a commercial center for the surrounding farms, where Saturday trade filled the downtown streets and grain elevators and creameries lined the tracks. The city was still growing in the early 1900s, and its civic life centered on churches, fraternal lodges, and the county courthouse, which drew farmers and lawyers from across the region.
