The photograph is labeled only "City, Iowa," with no town name, so this caption speaks to the Iowa of 1907 that its county seats and railroad towns shared. The state's economy rested on corn, hogs, and cattle, and grain elevators, creameries, and packing plants were the businesses that drew people to town squares. Steam railroads had reached most corners of the state by then, and electric interurban lines were being laid between neighboring towns, shortening trips for farm families who came in on Saturdays to trade, attend church, and visit the courthouse. Many residents would have known their town first as a stop on a rail line and a center for the surrounding farm country.
