In 1907, Iowa was one of the country's leading farm states, and its towns depended on the corn, oats, and hogs that moved out by rail. Many communities had grown up along lines of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific, the Chicago and North Western, and other railroads, which carried grain to elevators and livestock to packing houses. Coal mines in the south-central part of the state employed many men, and small factories and mills made goods for local markets. Town life centered on courthouse squares, churches, schools, and the new electric streetcar and lighting systems that were spreading through Iowa's larger cities. Residents of the period would have known their town mainly by its grain trade, its rail connections, and the county seat business that brought farmers in on Saturdays.
