Sioux City, Iowa, in 1911 was a river town where the Missouri, Big Sioux, and Floyd rivers meet, and its economy rested heavily on the livestock trade. Stockyards and meatpacking plants on the city's edges drew cattle, hogs, and sheep from the surrounding plains, and the railroads that converged there carried the dressed meat east. Packing work brought in large numbers of immigrant laborers, and the city's neighborhoods, churches, and street life reflected that mix. Residents of the day knew Sioux City first as a stockyards and packing center, and their civic life was shaped by the rhythms of those industries and the river that had once carried steamboat traffic.
