In 1912 Sioux City, Iowa, was a river city of roughly 45,000 to 50,000 people, sitting where the Floyd River enters the Missouri and where Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota meet. Local pride centered on the Sergeant Floyd Monument on the bluffs, completed in 1901 to honor a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition who died near the river in 1804. Wholesale houses, grain elevators and railroad yards moved freight through the town, while the city's daily newspapers followed council votes on paving, water mains and streetcar franchises. Residents thought of Sioux City as a commercial crossroads for the surrounding farm country, still reshaping its streets and neighborhoods as the population grew.
