In 1911 Sioux City, Iowa, was a meatpacking and livestock town on the Missouri River, where the stockyards and packing plants on the bottoms employed large numbers of workers and shipped beef and pork east by rail. Its position near the meeting point of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota made it a regional market and shopping center for farm families who drove or rode in on the streetcar lines. Electric streetcars carried workers from the flats up toward the growing residential districts on the bluffs, where new houses and churches were filling in blocks that had been open prairie a generation earlier. Residents knew the city as a packing center whose fortunes rose and fell with cattle prices and the weather on the plains.
