Montrose sits on the Mississippi River in Lee County, in the southeastern corner of Iowa, and this 1911 panorama shows a small river town whose life still depended on the water and the surrounding farms. The town's history reached back to 1846, when Latter-day Saints crossing the river on their way west gathered in the area during their exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois, across the water. By 1911, nearby Fort Madison, with its state penitentiary and railroad shops, drew more regional attention and jobs than Montrose did, while farmers in the county sold corn, oats, and hogs through local elevators and rail connections. Residents in 1911 would have known Montrose mainly as a quiet river crossing and a stop on the Mississippi trade routes.
