State College at Ames, Iowa, in 1911 was the Iowa State College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts, the land-grant school that had opened on the prairie north of town in 1869. Its students came largely from farms across the state to study scientific agriculture, engineering, veterinary medicine and home economics. Ames was a railroad town named for the financier Oakes Ames, and its economy leaned on the college, the rail lines and the surrounding farmland. Campus life before the First World War centered on required military drill, athletic contests and student societies, and residents took pride in the school's reputation. The view shows a campus still closely tied to the agricultural countryside that gave it purpose.
