In 1913 Ames, Iowa, was a railroad town of several thousand people, and the state agricultural and mechanical college sat at its center. The Chicago and Northwestern line ran through town, and the college's engineering and science programs drew growing numbers of students as Iowa's farm prosperity lifted family budgets. Experiment work on crops and livestock expanded alongside the classrooms, and the faculty's research gave the school a standing across the state. Local residents knew Ames for its campus, which shaped jobs, boarding houses and shops in the business district. The photograph shows that campus at a time when its growth seemed steady and when neighbors regarded it as the town's most valuable asset.
