In 1913 Fort Madison, the seat of Lee County on the Mississippi, leaned heavily on its railroad shops, where the Santa Fe employed machinists, boilermakers, and car repairers to keep its locomotives and freight cars running. Walter A. Sheaffer's fountain pen business, which had begun in town only a few years earlier, was drawing attention well beyond Iowa and gave residents a new source of local pride. Families living on the streets above the river watched heavy freight move through the yards and kept up with the small-city life of churches, shops, and schools. A view of the town from that year would show a community balancing industrial work with the everyday routines of its neighborhoods.
