State College in Ames, Iowa, was the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1913, and it stood at the center of a state whose economy rested on corn, hogs, and cattle. The college traced its origins to the federal land-grant act of 1862, and by the 1910s its experiment station, extension work, and engineering courses were carrying instruction and research out to farms across Iowa. Ames itself had been laid out as a railroad town on the Chicago and North Western line, and its daily life still followed the trains that carried students, grain, and livestock. Students and faculty knew the campus as a place where scientific farming was taught, with barns, shops, and laboratories set among open fields. George Washington Carver, who studied there in the 1890s before going on to Tuskegee, was among its best-known early students.
