Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, was the state's land-grant school of agriculture and mechanic arts, opened in 1869 under the Morrill Act of 1862. By 1907 it was closely tied to the farm economy that drove the state, with its teaching and experiment work centered on crops, livestock, and farm engineering. The town had grown up around the college and the railroad that ran through it, so students, faculty, and local merchants shared much of the same daily life. Visitors and families who saw a view of the grounds that year would have recognized it as the center of higher learning for Iowa's farmers and the young engineers who served them.
