Jefferson, the county seat of Greene County in west-central Iowa, looked much as it does in this 1907 panoramic view when farm prosperity was at a high point. Corn, oats, and hogs from the surrounding prairie fed the town's grain elevators, lumber yards, and stores, and the railroad brought in supplies and carried livestock and grain to markets farther east. Residents knew Jefferson as a courthouse town where farmers came on market days and county business drew people in from the countryside. That autumn the Panic of 1907 would tighten credit across the country, though the full effect on this farming community is less clear from the record.
