Jefferson, the county seat of Greene County in west-central Iowa, sat in 1907 at the center of a farming district where corn, oats, hogs, and cattle formed the basis of local trade. Its location on the Chicago and North Western rail line let farmers ship grain and livestock to distant markets, and the depot and stockyards were places where growers and merchants met regularly. The courthouse square and downtown blocks served as the civic center for a county whose politics, like most of rural Iowa at the time, leaned strongly Republican. Residents knew the town mainly as a market and courthouse seat, where a trip to town on market days was the main social event of the week.
