Algona, the seat of Kossuth County in north-central Iowa, was a small railroad and farm town in 1907, built around the courthouse square and the tracks that carried grain, livestock, and dairy goods out of the surrounding prairie. Most residents depended on corn, oats, hogs, and cattle raised on the farms that ringed town, and the trade in those products shaped its streets and its business blocks. Settlers from Germany, Scandinavia, and the eastern United States had filled the county over the preceding decades, and their churches, schools, and fraternal lodges gave the town much of its social life. Local people would have known Algona as the center of a prosperous agricultural county, a place where Saturday trade days, county fairs, and courthouse business drew farm families into town.
