Grinnell, Iowa, in 1907 was a small college and railroad town in Poweshiek County, founded in the 1850s by Congregationalist settlers and named for Josiah Bushnell Grinnell, a minister and land promoter who spoke against slavery. Grinnell College, which moved to the town in 1859, shaped much of its character, and residents took pride in its antislavery past, including John Brown's visit that same year. By the early twentieth century the local economy rested on farm trade, a rail line linking the town to larger markets, and manufacturing that included washing machines. Most people living there would have known Grinnell first as a college town with strong church ties.
