Adel, the county seat of Dallas County in west-central Iowa, was a small trade town on the Raccoon River in 1907, serving the farms that surrounded it. Its economy rested on corn, oats, and hogs raised on the rolling prairie, and grain buyers, livestock dealers, and shopkeepers did much of their business around the courthouse. Des Moines, about twenty miles east, was the nearest large market and the state capital, so Adel residents looked there for goods, news, and services. That October, a sharp national financial panic rattled banks across the country, a reminder that small-town fortunes in Iowa were tied to distant eastern credit markets as well as to the weather.
