Boone, Iowa, in 1907 was a county seat on the Des Moines River in Boone County, and its fortunes rested largely on the railroads and the coal and farm trade around it. Several lines crossed the valley there, and the rail yards and freight traffic gave the town much of its payroll. Coal mining in the surrounding county employed many local men, and the farms that fed the region sent grain and livestock through the depot. Boone also held a state institution for the mentally ill, which made it known beyond the county as a place of public employment and care. Residents in 1907 would have described their town first as a railroad and mining center on the river, a place where the whistle and the coal shaft set the daily rhythm.
