In 1907, Boone, Iowa, was a railroad and coal town on the Des Moines River in Boone County, with the Chicago and North Western running through it as a division point. The rail line and the river valley shaped where the town grew, and the Des Moines River crossing was a point of local pride. Boone County's coal mines employed many local men, and their work tied the town's fortunes to the fuel markets and the railroads that hauled coal out. Residents of the period knew Boone as a busy stop on the line across central Iowa, a place where trains, shops, and the courthouse square defined daily life.
