Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1907 was a river city of roughly 30,000 people, and its growth owed much to the Cedar River, whose falls powered mills and factories along its banks. The Quaker Oats plant, a large cereal works that had grown out of an earlier milling operation, was among the town's major employers, and grain, lumber, and farm goods moved through its rail yards. Several railroads served the city, and depots and freight sheds drew farmers and salesmen into its streets. Residents knew Cedar Rapids as a commercial center for Linn County and the surrounding farm trade, a place where river power and rail connections shaped daily life.
