In 1907, Cedar Rapids was an industrial city on the Cedar River, and its best-known employer was the Quaker Oats mill, whose towers and warehouses turned grain from the surrounding counties into packaged cereal shipped across the country. Oats and corn arrived by rail, and factories, foundries and packing works drew workers from nearby farms and from immigrant families, including a large Czech community. City leaders argued over paving, streetcar service and the supply of water and electric power, while the river that once drove sawmill wheels now helped feed the city's growing plants. Residents knew Cedar Rapids as a grain-milling center where factory wages supported families on both sides of the river.
