Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was a small liberal arts college in 1914, serving a city that had grown into one of the state's leading manufacturing centers. The Quaker Oats mill on the Cedar River was among the largest employers, and the city's population had passed 30,000 by the time of the 1910 census. Students at Coe would have walked to classes past streets of brick commercial blocks, streetcar lines, and the rail yards that tied Cedar Rapids to Chicago and Minneapolis. Local residents knew the campus as a center of church-linked education and student activity, and the college's growth reflected the city's broader confidence in schooling and industry in the years before the First World War.
