Cedar Rapids in 1914 was a Cedar River city of brick commercial blocks, with Coe College, founded in 1851, drawing students from across eastern Iowa. The Carnegie library on the city's streets had opened about a decade earlier, and the panorama's view of the downtown and river blocks reflects a town that had grown well beyond its sawmill beginnings. Farm prices held up that year, so merchants, implement dealers and grain buyers depended on the countryside around them. When war broke out in Europe that summer, local readers followed the news through the city's daily paper, the *Cedar Rapids Gazette*. To residents, the town was a prosperous trade center where the river, the rail lines and the farms met.
