In 1907 Chariton, the seat of Lucas County in south-central Iowa, was a market town whose fortunes still depended on the surrounding farms and the coal beneath them. Mines in the county employed a large share of local men, and the United Mine Workers was active among Iowa's miners, so questions of wages and working conditions were part of everyday talk around the courthouse square. Farmers still drove hogs, cattle, and grain into town on market days, and the rail lines that crossed the region carried that produce and the coal out to larger cities. To residents, the town was a place where mining, farming, and county government met along the same few streets.
