Carroll, Iowa, in 1907 was the county seat of Carroll County in the northwest part of the state, a farm town whose fortunes rose and fell with the surrounding fields. The Chicago and North Western Railway line that ran through town carried corn, oats, and hogs to market, and grain elevators, lumber yards, and stockyards clustered near the tracks. Creameries and dairy operations on the nearby farms added to the local trade, and the courthouse square served as the center of county politics and business. Residents of the period would have known Carroll as a dependable market town where farm families came to sell their crops, buy supplies, and conduct the county's affairs.
