Cedar Falls, a river town on the Cedar River in northeast Iowa, was home in 1907 to the Iowa State Normal School, a teacher-training college founded in 1876. Its campus drew students from across the state, many of whom would go on to teach in the one-room country schools and growing town schools that were common throughout Iowa in the early 1900s. The town's economy rested on its river, its mills, and its position as a regional center for farm trade, and the college was among its most visible institutions. Around the time this view was made, the school was expanding its buildings and course offerings, reflecting the state's steady demand for trained teachers. Local residents would have known Cedar Falls first as the home of the normal school.
