Falls, Iowa, pictured in 1907, sat in a state whose fortunes rested on the surrounding farmland. Iowa was then one of the nation's leading producers of corn and hogs, and farm families moved their grain and livestock out along the rail lines that crossed most counties. Small towns like this one depended on grain elevators, creameries, lumber yards and local merchants, and Saturday trading drew farmers in from the countryside. Residents would have known their town by its depot, its churches and its main street, which together formed the center of everyday life.
