East Waterloo, Iowa, in 1907 sat across the Cedar River from the older city of Waterloo, and the two together formed one of the busier manufacturing and railroad centers in northeastern Iowa. Meatpacking and related packing-house work provided many jobs, and the railroads, especially the Illinois Central and its repair shops, drew steady crews of machinists, carpenters, and laborers. Families who lived on the east side worked long shifts in the plants and shops, shopped along the commercial streets, and sent their children to the growing public schools and churches. Residents in 1907 would have known the town mainly as a place of mills, rail yards, and the smoke and noise that came with them, and as a community of working families whose fortunes rose and fell with the packing houses and the trains.
