Fairfield, the seat of Jefferson County in southeast Iowa, was a farm-trade town in 1907, where grain, livestock, and dairy produce moved through local elevators, stockyards, and merchants on and around the courthouse square. The surrounding prairie was largely settled and planted in corn and oats, and the town's fortunes rose and fell with those harvests and with the rail connections that carried goods to larger markets. Fairfield also had a college, Parsons College, which gave the town a share of students and a distinct social life of churches, lodges, and civic clubs. A panoramic view from the early twentieth century would have shown residents a town confident in its brick business blocks and its role as the county's center of commerce and government.
