Fort Dodge, the seat of Webster County in north-central Iowa, was a river town of roughly 15,000 people in 1907, set along the Des Moines River. Its economy rested on railroads, farming in the surrounding county, and the gypsum deposits quarried in the area, which supplied plaster and building materials. Rail lines running through the town carried grain, livestock, and manufactured goods to larger markets in Chicago and the Midwest, and the courthouse, churches, and commercial blocks of the business district reflected a community that had grown steadily since the late nineteenth century. Residents in 1907 knew Fort Dodge as a county center with a strong civic life, though its name also recalled the frontier army post established on the same ground in the 1850s.
