Des Moines, the Iowa capital, was in 1907 a city of insurance offices, railroad yards, and state government. Its position where the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers meet had drawn the United States Army there in 1843, when the original Fort Des Moines was built to keep order among settlers and the Sac and Fox lands to the north. The fort was abandoned in 1846, but the name stayed with the place, and by the early 1900s the army had returned to the site with a post of its own. Residents of the city in those years knew it as a center of life insurance and of the state's politics, with the gold-domed State Capitol standing above the downtown. This photograph shows the fort grounds and surrounding city as they looked at a time when the old military reservation was still closely tied to the town's identity.
