Des Moines in 1907 was a much larger city than the river town of earlier decades, with its population passing 60,000 by 1900 and its downtown lined with office blocks and retail buildings. Insurance had become one of its signature businesses, with life and accident companies headquartered along the streets near the capitol. Electric streetcars carried clerks, shoppers and workers between the business district and the residential neighborhoods spreading across the bluffs. Coal, grain and hogs still moved through the rail yards, but the city's identity was tilting toward finance and the professions. Residents would have known it as the state's commercial center, a place where farm money was counted, invested and insured.
